Taylor was an amazing tour guide! I learned a lot coming from her guiding skills as far as the history and general information about the tour. She taught me black historical facts that weren’t taught to me in school. That there alone stood out to me! To see a young African American woman speak knowledgeably about her history shows how much she cares about her culture. I also enjoyed hearing Ms. Roby speak as we went into the foot soldier’s office. I highly recommend anyone to go and gain knowledge of the Civil Rights History!
My family and I were in Birmingham for the weekend and decided to book this tour. It was time well spent! Our tour guide, Taylor, was amazing! It is one thing to watch a documentary or read a book on the civil rights movement - it’s another to actually stand on the sacred ground of it all and to actually hear from the folks who were there. We visited several sites, but three highlights include: 16th Street Baptist Church (where four little girls died after a bombing by the KKK in the ‘60s), Kelly Ingram Park (site of the Children’s Crusade), and the Civil Rights Activist Committee Headquarters where we heard from a woman who was jailed as a child after marching in the Crusade. This experience allowed us to discuss issues as a family in a way we never had before. I highly recommend this tour!
If this was about personality, I’d have nothing but nice things to say about Taylor. But, the fact is that we were looking at three tours and picked this one and came away a little disappointed. The price for all three tours was almost the same – the other two were bus tours and 3 hours long. This one was a walking tour which purported to be 2 hours long. It ended in about 1 and a quarter hours. So, for future reference….the tour is easy for anyone worried about doing a walking tour. It was less than a mile total and was at a very slow pace. I definitely felt they could expand the distance on this tour. We stood on a corner and looked over at a couple of theatres on the next block. Given the time we had to fill, that could certainly be added in to this tour. From reading the other reviews, I’m thinking the other guide might have had more knowledge to share. Again, Taylor was very sweet and I understand that she has not been giving the tour very long. But, it would have been nice to hear more history about Birmingham in general, as we walked along the streets. It was disappointing to pay over $60 to listen to a phone tell us things about a park – an audio tour we could have taken on our own for free. Whatever is included in that audio tour and more from history books would make this more interesting coming from a live person. The “We Shall Overcome” rendition in the park was definitely a good addition and brought a lot of emotion to the moment. Overall though, I'd have to say that if I knew then what I know now, I'd have given one of the bus tours a try.
This was our first visit to Birmingham and we had very limited time to see the city. We are so glad we found Freedom Line Tours and this particular tour. It was truly a wonderful experience overall. Our tour guides Taylor and Antonia did an excellent job of telling us about the city's history. Since this was a walking tour, we got an opportunity to spend a leisurely amount of time at each important location. Taylor and Antonia also took us to local clothing and perfume/oil stores to give us a complete experience. After the walking tour was over, Antonia asked us if we had some more time and drove us around farther parts of the city in her van. We also covered Negro Southern League Museum and Vulcan Park among some other prominent spots. Overall, Antonia and her entire team were very hospitable and great to talk to. On the tour, we were also accompanied by some of the very bright young volunteers from different parts of the country and were willing answer all our questions with great enthusiasm. I would highly recommend this tour for all Birmingham visitors. Best wishes!
